Guide for parents
By T-Leng, T-Leng Tuition · Checked against MOE and SEAB on 12 October 2026
MOE has removed mid-year exams. During the year students are assessed through weighted assessments and class assignments chosen by the school. A WA is a short test, often 30 to 50 minutes, on the chapters just taught. The end-of-year exam covers the whole year.
How much each WA and the end-of-year exam count towards the year's result is set by the school, and is usually in the assessment plan sent home at the start of the year.
Formats differ, but many schools use a scaled-down version of the national paper for the student's level:
The school sends the exact format and topic list a few weeks before the exam. That list is the one to revise from.
The chapters below follow a common order. Schools teach them in different orders and sometimes move a chapter between Sec 1 and Sec 2, so check against the school's topic list. Each one links to a free worksheet with answers.
From T-Leng's teaching, the same few things cost the most marks in Sec 1 and Sec 2: signs with negative numbers, expanding brackets with a minus in front, turning a word problem into an equation, units in area and volume (cm² and m³), and rounding (3 significant figures is not 3 decimal places). Each MugCorner notes chapter has a common mistakes section for these.
Practice papers with worked solutions: Sec 1 Maths exam papers and Sec 2 Maths exam papers. The Sec 1 and Sec 2 formula list has everything to remember.
Under Full SBB, school results decide whether a student can move up a subject level (see G1, G2 and G3 Maths explained). Near the end of Sec 2, they also decide upper secondary subject choices, including whether a student can take A-Math.
Schools set their own lower secondary exams and subject criteria; check the details with your child's school.
